The nose is one of the most prominent facial features. While a proportional nose can accentuate the overall look of an individual, a deformed or disproportional nose can cause some aesthetic and functional problems. Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that corrects these aesthetic and functional problems of the nose. This surgical procedure is effective in improving the different level of deformity, both accidental or congenital. It also treats functional problems like heavy respiration, snoring, noisy breathing etc.
In this blog, we will discuss one specific feature of rhinoplasty surgery, tip correction procedure. The tip of the nose is made up of skin, fat and is supported by a cartilage structure. And it is normal for someone to feel unhappy with the structure of the nose. Hence, either due to personal preference or aesthetic needs people go under tip correction surgery.
There are some important facts that one should know before choosing the procedure.
1 The surgeon
It is crucial to find a good surgeon who has the skills and experience in the respective procedure. It is important that a patient openly discuss the problem and the kind of results he/she is expecting from the procedure. Ask for real before and after images, testimonials, and patients feedback for a similar procedure. This will give the patient a better understanding of the procedure and provide a realistic take on the results that can be achieved through the surgery.
2 The procedure
Rhinoplasty is usually done under local or general anaesthesia. Because the procedure is performed on the face, special attention is given to speed up the recovery process without leaving any visible signs of scars. The procedure starts by making incisions in the ala and apex which are at the opening of the nose. Once the tissues from these points are disconnected the whole skin is moved back to expose the cartilage bridge of the nose. From here there are two basic possibilities in the surgery. Either the size of the tip will be decreased or it will be elevated. In the case of reduction, the surgeon will clip the cartilage and fat to bring the size and shape of the nose closer to the expected result.
On the other hand, the size of the nose is elevated either adding fat or using additional cartilages. Cartilage is taken from ribs or the ears.
Because the cartilage is from the patient body, it ensures easy adaptability of the cartilage with the body that maintains the result of the procedure.
3 Preparation
Preparation for rhinoplasty starts a meeting with the surgeon who will physically examine the nose and will decide the changes that it requires according to the expectations of the procedure. Apart from the medical examination, a patient also goes through a series of tests.
These tests are conducted to know more about
1 Medical history of the patient
2 The physical condition of the targeted area
Along with the test, some photographs of the patient are also taken for comparison.
4 Post Surgery
During recovery from Rhinoplasty, one should follow some precautions to get the best result.
The patient is discharged the same day of the surgery. If the procedure will be performed under general anaesthesia the patient must be accompanied by a friend or family member to take care of him/her until the effect of anaesthesia subsides.
5 Precautions
A patient might feel conjunction in the nose due to swelling along with slight sensation. Medication is provided to provide relief from the discomfort. In case the pain persists, consult with the doctor.
The patient should be very careful about the head position while sleeping and doing regular activities. One should always keep the nose above the chest while sleeping. No jerk or sudden impact to the head can cause some damage. Don't hang the head for exercise or to lift heavy objects.
The internal dressing comes off after one day, and the patient can resume daily routine just from the next day. The external dressing is taken off after 5 days. The overall symptoms of the surgery subside within a month and after the patient can go back to normal routine and can resume the workout. Results will start to be seen after one month but final results will be at 9 months.
The tip correction procedure is a small part of Rhinoplasty surgery. One should consult with a board-certified surgeon to explore the true extent of the procedure. So, if someone desires changes in the shape of their nose, give rhinoplasty chance.
